Craigslist Encounters

Remember the first time you ever visited the casual encounters section? The excitement! So many ads! It seemed so simple.

You figured you'd read the ads and pick out the one that caught your attention. You replied. Nothing.

Then you said, let me try replying to a whole bunch of them. You replied. Your Inbox filled  up with spam.

Then you tried posting an ad of your own. 31 year old single male seeking female companion. Remember that? You put up your favorite picture of yourself, wrote something clever, specified NO SPAM. (Thinking that would discourage the spammers). And waited. . . remember how the only real person that was interested was a dude? ? I remember getting so frustrated that I actually sat there and considered it. Honestly,  I sat there and said What the Hell! I didn't actually do it but I considered it. Of course I ended up on youporn or some site like that and got through the night.

My most memorable experience with craigslist's casual encounter section has to be this one.

I replied to an ad that seemed pretty genuine. She replied back. After exchanging photos and showing mutual interest, I asked her to talk a little on msn before actually meeting up. She accepted. We spoke for about 2 minutes on cam and arranged to meet up at a local bar that night. She told me to meet her at about 11pm. She pointed out that she might be a little late but to not worry. She was definately coming and that she couldn't wait to meet me.

When I got to the bar, I sat down, ordered a drink and waited. After about 15 minutes I ordered a second drink. Another 15 minutes went by and I of course ordered a 3rd drink. I looked around and noticed about 20 men sitting by themselves. They were all looking at their watches and looking towards the door as if they were waiting for someone. I got suspicious. I asked one of the patrons if he was waiting for someone. Of course he was waiting for the same girl I was waiting for. The guy to my left overheard our conversation and told us he was waiting for her too. We went around asking everyone if they were waiting for a Cassandra. Almost every customer in there was waiting for her. Feeling a little ashamed and angered, because we felt as if they tricked us into going there in order to get our money or for publicity or whatever their reason was, we got up and took off without paying our bill. I remember this one guy sat there and said "I'm not leaving, she's hot, she's definately worth the wait." I got a good laugh but felt kinda bad for the guy.

I went home and of course she had blocked me from her msn.

The sad truth that I've come to understand is that any free dating site or classified section is a haven for scammers and spammers.

Post something that's happened to you while visiting the famous Craigslist casual encounter section. Don't feel silly. It's probably happened to another few hundred people. It feels good to get it off our chest :)

  1. Dude! Bummer! I once had a guy pretending to be a girl. I fell for it. We actually met and he told me that he really liked my picture and that's why he did. He just HAD to meet me. I was way too creeped out to do anything about it and just got the hell out of there. I remember he told me that he'd be better than any girl I'd ever been with.. that was the end of my craigslist adventure. I agree with what you said about the free sites though. Meeting women is pretty unlikely.
